Product configurator
A product configurator is software that lets a buyer or salesperson build a specific version of a product by choosing from a defined set of options, and that only allows combinations the manufacturer can actually build. Instead of a static spec sheet, the buyer picks dimensions, materials, finishes, and accessories directly, and the tool validates each choice as they go. For a B2B manufacturer, a configurator turns the messy back-and-forth of an RFQ into a guided, self-serve step the buyer completes before anything reaches a salesperson.
Visual product configurator
A visual product configurator is a configurator that shows the buyer an image or render of the product updating live as they change options, rather than presenting choices as plain text or dropdowns alone. It typically uses 2D photography swaps or 3D rendering to make each option visible. Visual configurators are common where finish, color, or layout meaningfully changes how the product looks, which is most of what B2B manufacturers sell.
2D configurator
A 2D configurator shows the product using flat images or diagrams — swapping in a different photo or illustration for each option combination — rather than a rotatable 3D model. It is faster and cheaper to build than 3D because it relies on pre-rendered images instead of real-time rendering, and it is often sufficient for products where a straight-on photo communicates the option clearly, like a locker door finish or a sign panel color.
3D configurator
A 3D configurator renders the product as an interactive 3D model that the buyer can typically rotate, zoom, and view from multiple angles as options change. It communicates depth, proportion, and assembly better than flat images, but each product and option requires 3D modeling work, which is the main reason 3D configurators cost more to build and maintain than 2D ones.
CPQ (Configure, Price, Quote)
CPQ stands for Configure, Price, Quote — software that combines product configuration with automated pricing and quote generation in one workflow. A buyer or sales rep configures a valid product, the system calculates the price using rules for options, quantity, and discounts, and it generates a formal quote document automatically. Visual CPQ
Visual CPQ is CPQ software with a visual configurator built in, so the buyer sees the product update as they configure it and gets a price at the same time, rather than configuring blind and receiving a quote separately later. It combines the visualization benefits of a visual configurator with the automated pricing and document generation of standard CPQ.
Guided selling
Guided selling is a sales approach where software walks a buyer through a structured sequence of questions or choices to arrive at the right product, rather than expecting them to already know the catalog. It is the interaction pattern behind most configurators: each answer narrows the valid next options, so a buyer with no catalog expertise still ends up at a buildable, correctly specified product.
Interactive catalog
An interactive catalog is a digital product catalog that responds to user input — filtering, comparing, or configuring products — instead of presenting a static list of SKUs and spec sheets. Many manufacturer configurators double as an interactive catalog, since browsing the option set is itself a way of exploring what is available.
Variant
A variant is one specific, buildable version of a product created by a particular combination of option choices — a given size, material, finish, and accessory set. In a configurator, every completed configuration corresponds to exactly one variant, which typically maps to a SKU or configuration ID the factory can produce.
Rules & data
Rules engine
A rules engine is the part of a configurator or CPQ system that encodes which option combinations are valid, which are invalid, and how one choice constrains the choices available afterward. It is what stops a buyer from selecting a finish that does not exist for a given material, or a fixing type that cannot support a given size. The rules engine is the piece that turns a product catalog into something that can only produce buildable orders.
Constraint (valid combinations)
A constraint is a rule that restricts which product options can be combined, expressing something the factory or engineering team already knows — that option A requires option B, or that option C excludes option D. Constraints are what a rules engine enforces; a well-modeled set of constraints is the difference between a configurator that prevents bad orders and one that just displays options.
Product / catalog data
Product or catalog data is the structured information describing everything a manufacturer sells — the products, their available options, prices, dimensions, materials, and the rules governing which combinations are valid. A configurator is only as good as this underlying data; most of the effort in building one is modeling and structuring the catalog data correctly, not the interface on top of it.
SKU / part-number generation
SKU or part-number generation is the automatic creation of a unique product code from a completed configuration, so that a specific combination of options maps to one identifiable part number the factory and ERP system both recognize. Configurators that generate part numbers automatically remove a manual step where estimators previously assigned or looked up codes by hand.
Quoting
RFQ (Request for Quote)
An RFQ, or Request for Quote, is a buyer's formal request asking a supplier to price a specific product or job, typically including the specifications the buyer wants quoted. In B2B manufacturing, RFQs frequently arrive incomplete — missing a dimension, finish, or quantity break — which is the core problem covered in the real cost of an incomplete spec.
Quote builder
A quote builder is a tool that assembles a formal price quote document from a configuration or set of line items, typically applying pricing rules and formatting the result for the buyer. It is often the output stage of a configurator or CPQ system, turning a validated configuration directly into a document a salesperson can send.
Quote turnaround time
Quote turnaround time is the elapsed time between a buyer submitting an RFQ and receiving a priced, complete quote back. It's driven mostly by how much back-and-forth is needed to clarify an incomplete spec, not by the pricing calculation itself — which is why fixing intake quality tends to cut turnaround more than automating pricing alone. Spec sheet
A spec sheet is a document listing a product's available options, dimensions, materials, and technical details for reference. Unlike a configurator, a spec sheet is static and does not validate a buyer's choices or catch invalid combinations — it puts the burden of getting the combination right entirely on the person reading it.
Lead time
Lead time is the period between an order being confirmed and the product being ready for delivery, covering production, sourcing, and any queue ahead of the order. Manufacturers with configure-to-order or engineer-to-order models typically quote lead time alongside price, since it varies by configuration in a way a stock product's does not.
Manufacturing models
Configure-to-order (CTO)
Configure-to-order, or CTO, is a manufacturing model where a product is assembled or finished from predefined, modular options only after a customer places an order, rather than being built to stock in advance. CTO sits between standard stock products and full custom engineering — the option set is fixed and known, which is exactly the situation a configurator is built to handle well, as seen in categories like lockers and distribution.
Engineer-to-order (ETO)
Engineer-to-order, or ETO, is a manufacturing model where a product requires custom engineering design work specific to each order, rather than being assembled from a predefined set of options. ETO products are harder to configure fully in software because part of the specification genuinely depends on new engineering judgment — common in industrial equipment — though a configurator can still handle the standardized portion of the order and hand off the custom part.
Make-to-order (MTO)
Make-to-order, or MTO, is a manufacturing model where production starts only after a confirmed customer order, as opposed to make-to-stock, where products are manufactured in advance of demand. Most configurator-driven manufacturers operate MTO or CTO, since the whole premise of letting a buyer choose options only makes sense if production waits for that choice.
Bill of materials (BOM)
A bill of materials, or BOM, is the complete list of parts, components, and quantities required to build one unit of a product. A configurator can generate a BOM automatically from a completed configuration, so the exact components needed for that specific variant are known immediately rather than assembled manually by an engineer after the order is placed.
Channel
Dealer portal
A dealer portal is a private, login-gated section of a manufacturer's site where dealers or distributors configure products, place orders, and get dealer-specific pricing, separate from the public-facing site. It is a common way manufacturers extend a configurator to their channel without exposing dealer pricing to end customers.
White-label configurator
A white-label configurator is a configurator that runs on a dealer's or distributor's own website under their branding, while orders are still routed back to the manufacturer that built it. It lets a manufacturer extend its configuration and ordering logic across its entire dealer network without each dealer building anything themselves.
Self-serve buying
Self-serve buying is a purchasing process where the buyer completes research, configuration, and often quote generation on their own, without needing a salesperson involved until later in the process — or at all. Forrester and other B2B research consistently finds buyers increasingly prefer to self-serve as far as possible before talking to sales, which is a large part of why manufacturers add configurators to their own sites.
Integration & outputs
ERP integration
ERP integration is the connection between a configurator or CPQ system and a manufacturer's enterprise resource planning software, so a completed configuration or order flows into the ERP as structured data — a part number, BOM, and order record — instead of being re-entered by hand. It is typically the most complex and highest-value integration a manufacturer adds, since it removes manual data entry between quoting and production.
CRM integration
CRM integration is the connection between a configurator or quoting tool and a manufacturer's customer relationship management software, so that configurations, quotes, and buyer contact information sync automatically into the sales team's existing pipeline records. It keeps sales reps working from one system instead of copying quote details between tools.
CAD output
CAD output is a computer-aided design file — such as a drawing or 3D model — generated automatically from a completed product configuration, so engineering or manufacturing has a design file to work from without redrawing the configured variant from scratch. It is most valuable for configure-to-order products with many dimensional variants, where manually drafting each one would be slow.
BIM output
BIM output is a Building Information Modeling file generated from a product configuration, giving architects, contractors, and specifiers a model of the exact configured product they can drop directly into a building design. It's most relevant to manufacturers in construction-adjacent categories such as access control, signage, and racking, where specifiers work in BIM software as standard practice.
